How to make a font from your handwriting

You can turn your handwriting into a real font file in about half an hour, with nothing more than a phone or a computer. This guide walks through what to draw, how to keep the letters consistent and how to get the file into the apps you use.

This guide answers how to make a font from your handwriting without printing anything. The older way is to print a grid, fill it in with a pen, scan it and upload the scan. Writing directly on a screen skips the paper, and it records more than a scan can: the order of your strokes, their timing and the pressure of a stylus. That is what lets MyHandFont smooth each stroke at the level you choose (Low, Medium or High), build a clean outline around it and replay your writing as an animated GIF.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Pick your pen and stick to it. Choose a finger, a stylus or a mouse and a pen width, and use the same for every letter. One even width across the alphabet matters more than any single perfect letter.
  2. Draw the 26 lowercase letters. Write each letter on the guides: small letters between the baseline and the small letters line, tall strokes such as the stems of b, d and l up to the tall letters line, tails such as g and y down to the tails line. Twenty-six lowercase letters are enough to set whole sentences.
  3. Check a sentence in the preview. The preview sets a sentence from the first letter you draw, using the letters you have so far. Once the lowercase is done, type your own words into it. Look for letters that are too big, too small or too heavy compared with their neighbours, and redraw those first.
  4. Add capitals, digits and punctuation. Draw A to Z, 0 to 9 and the eight marks . , ' - ? ( & @ when you want them. Missing capitals fall back to scaled-up lowercase letters, and marks such as ! : ; ) are built from the ones you drew.
  5. Set the spacing. Move the spacing slider until words look evenly spaced at reading size. Spacing is measured from the ink of each letter, so where you drew inside the box does not matter.
  6. Export the font file and install it. The font file is made on the phone: export the .ttf from the MyHandFont Android app (if you drew on the website, its project file carries your letters to the app). Install the file on a Windows PC or a Mac and pick the font in Word or Cricut Design Space; Canva and Procreate take the file as an upload instead.

How to keep the letters consistent

A handwriting font is read one word at a time, so the eye notices differences between letters more than the shape of any single one. Three things make the biggest difference:

Do not worry about where in the box you draw left to right. The app measures the ink of each letter and gives it even space on both sides. Kerning (pulling pairs such as T and o closer) is also automatic.

Turn handwriting into font files you can install

To turn handwriting into font files that other programs accept, the outline matters. MyHandFont joins your strokes into one filled shape per letter, removes overlaps, and writes a standard TrueType (.ttf) file with proper metrics, so Windows, macOS and design apps treat it like any font they ship. Drawing, preview, the GIF and a PNG sample are free; the font file is a single one-time purchase in the Android app, not a subscription.

Once you have the file, the install guide covers Windows, Mac, Word, Canva, Cricut Design Space and Procreate.

Draw on the web, finish on your phone

If you started on a computer, you can draw your own font with a mouse on the home page and carry it across later. The Project file button saves every stroke; import it in the app under Settings, Backup. This is also the backup for your work: keep the file and you can make a font of your handwriting again on a new phone without redrawing a single letter.

Common problems

A good handwriting font maker hides the font engineering, but it helps to know what is happening: every letter you draw becomes a set of curves, and a font is those curves plus the spacing between them. Draw slowly enough that your strokes look like your normal writing, and the result will read as yours. Search for "my handwriting font" and most results are fonts that imitate somebody else's writing; this one is yours. People use theirs for wedding invitations, labels, planners and Cricut projects, and some create a font from handwriting kept in a parent's letters by copying it carefully on screen.

Questions

How long does it take to make a handwriting font?
About ten minutes for the 26 lowercase letters and twenty to thirty minutes for all 70 characters, plus a few redraws. Taking a break halfway is fine; your work is saved as you go.
Do I need a printer or a scanner?
Not with MyHandFont. You write directly on the screen, so there is no template to print and nothing to scan or photograph.
Is a stylus better than a finger?
A stylus gives finer control and, when the device reports pressure, varies the stroke width like a real pen. A finger works well for bold, rounded handwriting. A mouse works but tends to look stiffer.
Can I use my font in Cricut Design Space?
Yes. Install the .ttf on your Windows or Mac computer, restart Design Space, and the font appears in the font list under System fonts. Handwriting fonts with connected strokes are good for writing with Cricut pens.
Who owns the font I make?
You do. The copyright line inside the font file carries the name you gave the font, not ours, and you can use it for personal and commercial projects.
